NDN

Posted in *sigh* on September 18th, 2007

One of the people responsible for a pretty good chunk of the laughter & good times in my life died today.

I hadn’t talked to him in a year or so, but he was always still there. Something would remind me of something & there would be a great NDN story to be told that went along with it.

One of the scariest moments in my life was when NDN was driving that damn Geo Metro, giving me a lift to work. He was talking about what a good driver he was and suddenly slammed his seat back into the full reclining position and was driving completely blind down Peoria at about 35 miles an hour.

Of course when we went to Denver to see Xpy that one New Years Eve, he had to bring up that terrifying moment on the drive home and repeat the whole scene, this time in a minivan, just to make sure I hadn’t forgotten it.

I will remember:

NDN firewalking through burning couch bonfires behind the Argonne.

Walking into Dave’s apartment one night after a party and seeing NDN sitting serenely cross-legged shirtless on Dave’s couch. He just looked up at me, saw my expression, and said “I’m Buddha”.

NDN later breaking that couch.

NDN passing out all over.   Seriously, he passed out in like 5 different places in what seemed a simultaneous feat of time warping.
Blowing a triple giant fireball with Xpy & NDN.

The night of 1001 jello shots.

NDN always dicking with my shitty computer to make it better.

The fact that he had the balls to give his son the middle name “Zaphod”.

All his drunken diatribes about what I needed to do with my life. Heh. I did most of them too. And he was about 80% right.

Spontaneous road trips (“We’re going to OKC to see Bruce Campbell – be ready in 10 minutes”).

And… the fact that NDN took me to the Center of the Universe and made me a man.

He was a dick sometimes, but all people you consider family usually are.

I will miss you, my friend.

I’ll go through my old video tapes/pictures if I can & post some choice videos & pics of him.

Oh – and just because he thought it was the most clever thing he had ever said when he saw the video tape the morning after and would quote it from time to time:

“See Lisa, all those times you thought I was drunk… I was only ACTING stupid!”

Halloween 2007

*applause*

Not too shabby.

The whole first half of the movie was excellent. All the things that were only hinted at in the original were thrown up on the screen in gory Zombie splendor.

Also, Ken Foree as the trucker & Udo Kier and Sid Haig’s cameos made me happy.
(Although in the workprint we saw, Udo’s part was much larger.)

McDowell vs. Pleasance in the Loomis role was hard for me. It seemed like McDowell hadn’t seen the first movie. His Loomis was more… I dunno… human than Pleasance’s. Rick thinks it’s just because there’s so much more development of the Loomis/Michael story, but to me Pleasance seemed as if he was treating Michael as an experiment or an animal through the whole movie. Much more clinical. Also much more passionate.

I love Malcom McDowell, but I’m gonna have to go with Pleasance as a better Loomis.

The second half of the movie? I prefer the original. Zombie did a good job, but it just didn’t stand up to the classic.

Michael Myers was Michael Myers. Perfect. No noticeable difference from the real Michael. Even the weird little head cocking.

The girl playing Laurie was really good. But again, as with Pleasance, how to you stand up to the queen of screams? She was cuter than Jamie Lee, but c’mon, Jamie Lee Curtis is Jamie Lee Curtis!

One thing happened that cheesed me off, because it wasn’t supposed to happen until part 6 – but I won’t go into it for those who want to see it.

I think it’s sad that Zombie has no plans for Halloween 2. As Rick brought up, 1 and 2 are actually pretty much one movie and should be treated as such.

Overall – happy with it. After seeing the workprint I think the theatrical version could’ve been stronger if they would’ve kept some of the cut parts in. Hopefully they’ll be on the dvd release. Because everyone can use more Udo!

Murka is Dumb

Posted in 'Murka on September 2nd, 2007

So we watched a silly little movie last night.

It was called Idiocracy and was all about 500 years in the future when the United States has become a trash-covered wasteland full of idiots.

Now, personally, I’ve been wondering lately why ‘Murka has been becoming so seemingly overwhelmingly stupid.

I think the introduction of this movie explains it really well.
